ERIE VISION TRIPLEX #5014
Product code: 2431020Description
Erie Triplex 2-8-8-8 Steam Locomotive The Triplex steam locomotive was a groundbreaking design, built to maximize traction and power. Developed in 1914, this locomotive took the compound Mallet concept further by utilizing both the locomotive’s weight and the tender for additional traction. On paper, it could put 89% of its loaded weight to use and pull a train five miles long. However, its immense power made it difficult to test without breaking couplers, leading some to consider it one of the most powerful locomotives ever built.
The first Triplex entered service as number 2603, named after a respected engineer. Two additional locomotives followed in 1916, assigned as helper engines on steep grades. The Triplex featured a three-cylinder design, with steam routed through multiple pistons to drive both the locomotive and tender wheels. While the design provided exceptional power, the boiler struggled to maintain pressure, and wheel slipping became an issue as fuel was consumed. Despite these challenges, the locomotives remained in service until 1933.
Only one other railroad attempted a Triplex design, but it was soon rebuilt into a smaller locomotive. Though not a widespread success, the Triplex remains a fascinating example of experimental steam engineering.
Now reintroduced with modern enhancements, this locomotive brings historical railroading to life with advanced features.
Key Features:
Realistic Wheel Slip Simulation: Tender wheels slip under specific conditions, adding to the realism.
Multiple Control Options: Operate using a remote, a mobile app, or a command system. Compatible with conventional transformers for traditional operation.
Authentic Sound and Voice Control: Includes realistic steam engine sounds, adjustable whistle and bell tones, and interactive crew and tower communications. Voice control allows operation through a mobile app.
Realistic Smoke and Lighting Effects: Features a fan-driven smoke system, adjustable smoke output, illuminated classification lights, and directional lighting.
Durable and Detailed Construction: Built with a sturdy metal frame, metal tender body, and trucks for long-lasting performance. Includes a high level of separately applied details and an authentic builder’s plate.
Enhanced Coupling and Speed Features: Equipped with an automatic rear coupling mechanism and speed control for smooth operation.
