In the late 1930’s, the 50’ boxcar started to become the choice car to ship various goods with compared to the iconic 40’ boxcar. With the advent of additional space, larger, bulkier items such as automobiles and furniture were able to be shipped in 50’ boxcars. Many 50’ boxcars were placed in special service to haul only those commodities. Because of the double doors, it was a lot easier to load and unload big, bulky items from these cars.
