Upon America’s entry into WWII in late 1941, Defense Plant Corporation contracted with American Car & Foundry to build 800 troop kitchen cars. Outfitted with coal ranges, water tanks, refrigerators and storage units, these cars were used during train movement to provide meal service en-route.
