Introduced in 1933 amidst the Great Depression and inhonor of its namesake’s 200th birthday, The GeorgeWashington became the new standard bearer for firstclassservice on the Chesapeake and Ohio. It was onlythe second fully airconditioned long distance train inthe country and one of the few where the Pullman namewas pushed aside for the train’s own name in the primecenter space of the letterboards. Names associatedwith Washington adorned the cars exteriors and thecolonial motif was carried to the interiors as well.The train connected Washington DC with Cincinnatiwith connecting service to New York and St. Louis andoffered passengers one of the most scenic if not directroutes between those points. Of course, it was also thebest way to arrive in style at the C&O’s own GreenbrierResort. Initially led by spotless F-19 Pacifics, the GeorgeWashington always rated the best of steam and dieselpower.
