BY ED CRIST WITH JOHN KRAUSE
The Lehigh & New England was a bridge carrier stretching from anthracite country in northeastern Pennsylvania to the gateway yard at Maybrook, New York. The L&NE board of directors decided to end all railroad operations on October 31, 1961. Although the L&NE was still profitable, the rapid decline of the anthracite coal business was seen on the horizon and the decision was made to cease operations. In 1961 the Central Railroad of New Jersey took over some former L&NE lines in Pennsylvania.
This book features rare photos of this anthracite carrier in its final 20 years, from the hard coal fields of Pennsylvania to Maybrook, New York. Enjoy great photos of Camelbacks and conventional steam, to transition era Alco FA-1s and RS-2s.
